Across the world, liberal democracy faces illiberal challenges. While spreading panic about the return of fascism is dangerous and out of focus, several countries are experiencing processes of autocratisation.

On ECPR’s blog site The Loop, political comparativist Luca Manucci connected the dots and illustrated this worrying trend.

Since his first blog piece was published, back in August 2021, 19 essays have been penned in response, by contributors around the globe.

Our 90-minute roundtable tackled the following questions:
  • How can we make sense of the processes of autocratisation taking place across the world?
  • What are the causes and consequences of these illiberal tendencies?
  • What strategies can we adopt to combat autocratisation?

Free and open to all

The roundtable took stock of the Loop's 🌊 Illiberalism essay series and brought the discussion forward with a group of international experts.

About the House Series

The House Series is open to both ECPR Member and Non-Member affiliates.

Harbour House, our HQ in the UK, is a literal and metaphorical ‘home’ for the ECPR community.

The Series is designed to provide platforms and spaces for discourse, reaching out beyond academe and shining a light on the work of our discipline.

Each talk seeks to open doors to some of the most pressing issues across the discipline, and is followed by an extended Q&A session.
